NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Side Pole Impact:
A small-sized adult female crash test dummy is placed in the driver's seat and is secured with a seat belt. The test vehicle, angled at 75 degrees, is then pulled sideways at 20 mph (32km/h) into a 25-cm diameter pole at the driver's seating location. This test mimics a side impact crash involving a narrow, fixed object like a utility pole or tree. 1 star is the lowest rating; 5 stars is the highest. More stars equal safer cars.

I'm not sure how they could or did fix this - other than the gas issue this is a really good crumple-zone performance for a 1978 small car. Moving the filler ahead of the rear axle is a nonstarter in a 4-door although some 2-door-only FWD cars did exactly that so I suppose the only option would be stiffening away the crumple zone.

I had a 1990 2-door RS hatchback. Great car. Only once, I got it up to 122.5 MPH. Never again. I really liked the 100% 360 degree visibility. It had an incredible tiny turning circle. Short throw 5-speed. Lots of storage space. It was my favorite car. Sold to the state of California for $1,000 because I could no longed get it smog checked and passed after 17 years. California then crushed it.

Concord very poor (if any) crumple zone. Rabbit / Golf thus forced to absorb all of the energy of the impact, consequently collapsing like a can. Overall, doesn't seem to be very good for occupants of neither car.

I just had a wreck in my 2017 like this yesterday with my whole family in their and none of our airbags went off and we was doing 55 mph and hit stopped traffic brakes failed I pushed the pedal so hard I think I bent it note everyone is sore today but still alive

Interesting test, I'd never seen it before. I have four 2nd gen Cavaliers. The crush points did quite well. A lot of energy was absorbed there. Floor/firewall looked okay too. Not bad for 50mph head on. Survivable. EDIT: With the belt on, of course.
